YouTube to YouTube Kids Sharing

Allowing parents to share YouTube content that is unavailable on YouTube Kids because of automatic content moderation.

My Role

  • Lead Product Designer.

  • Outlined key needed features and friction points that would need to be addressed in the UX.

  • Oversaw the progress of the work and made requirements for needed changes to align with design and product standards across two apps: YouTube and YouTube Kids

Project and Design Goals

  • Create a function that fits well into both the YouTube app and YouTube Kids app and their different design language.

  • Put all the parent controls on the YouTube app side.

Challenges

  • Make easy for kids to find the shared video without having to add overly complicated functions or areas to the kids app.

  • How to notify kids when new videos have been shared from their parents.

Success metrics

  • Increase in streaming hours and MAUs.

  • Steady engagement with the shared function.

  • Increase parent and kids satisfaction.

The kids share function v1 version on the YouTube app share sheet.

Parents could then see all the kids profile’s associated with their account and share the video.

The Kids app has the shared videos next to the recommended ones so it would be easiest to find. The nav icon would then show a new video tag to signal to kids when new videos were shared.

The TV app version had a more aggressive promotion in order to help parents and kids understand the new feature.
